At Sunnyside we are putting into practice the term ‘Croft’ in its true sense as it is important to us that we work this marginal piece of ground by the sea for the purpose it was used in the past. The Croft was once owned by the MacDonald’s and it is believed that Bishop Hugh MacDonald of Morar (cousin of Sunnyside MacDonald) used a building here as a Seminary and, on the 19th August 1745, he left for Glenfinnan to Bless the Standard of Charles Stuart. Peaceful times are enjoyed here now and the area is abundant with beautiful scenery, wildlife and plant life, all ever changing with the seasons.
Thinking carefully in what livestock would be best suited for the West Highland environment, predominantly, nothing else could match the hardiness of Highland Cattle and Hebridean Sheep. Seaweed is collected from the beach, and Compost is produced on the Croft, all for our Vegetables and Fruit that we grow here. Working on an Organic principle, we are careful not to unbalance the native plant and animal life and the ecosystems they live in. Our aim is to achieve a balance on our Croft where we can live harmoniously with nature. |
